Grand Slam Winners Compete at 2019 Cajun Classic
State and local Leaders Welcome World’s Top Players
Seventy-one of the world’s top ranked professionals, including several Grand Slam winners, competed in the 30th annual Cajun Classic Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, March 19-24, in Baton Rouge, at the Paula G. Manship YMCA.
This year’s field was comprised of 120 professional and amateur players from 23 countries and 24 states (including Louisiana), and included the winners and finalists of the world’s four Grand Slams: the U.S. Open, the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon.
Louisiana’s Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser, represented by Director of Public Affairs Betsy Barnes, and East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome officially welcomed the athletes at “Louisiana Day at the Cajun Classic” on Saturday, March 23, at noon, and cut a 30th Anniversary cake for everyone to enjoy (pictured right).
New this year was “Jeanie Peabody Kid’s Day at the Cajun Classic,” held Friday, March 22, at 5 p.m.. The fun and interactive event introduced children to wheelchair tennis to children through fun games and instruction. Kid’s Day was named after Peabody who founded the original Cajun Classic in Natchez, MS.
The Cajun Classic, long recognized as one of the most popular wheelchair tournaments worldwide, was elevated in 2018 to the “Super Series” level, just one step below the Grand Slams.
There are only six Super Series tournaments in the world, and only two in the United States (the other in St. Louis).

About the Cajun Classic
The Cajun Classic Wheelchair Tennis Tournament is sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is one of only two Super Series tournaments in the United States and one of only six Super Series worldwide. Every year, the Cajun Classic attracts top professionals and amateurs from throughout the world.
Players who participate in the Cajun Classic are all ages — seniors to teenagers — and include those who are paraplegics, quadriplegics and amputees, as well as those with birth defects. But, the players’ disabilities have become “different abilities” as they play amazing and highly-competitive tennis.
The Cajun Classic is supported by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), USTA-Southern Section, the Louisiana Tennis Association (LTA), and the Greater Baton Rouge Community Tennis Association (GBRCTA), which is the presenting sponsor.
