A look back at our awesome 2019 Hallowheel Tournament …
The 2019 Hallowheel charity tennis and pickleball tournaments raised a combined $23,686.87 to benefit the 2020 Cajun Classic Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, to be held March 17-22, in Baton Rouge. $23,686.87 RAISED FOR THE 2020 CAJUN CLASSIC Nearly $86,000 raised since 2015
The Baton Rouge Wheelchair Tennis Association (BRWTA) announced at its board dinner on Nov. 4 that it raised $23,686.87 to help support the 2020 Cajun Classic Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, to be held in Baton Rouge, March 17-22, at the Paula G. Manship YMCA.
The BRWTA raised the funds through its Edward Jones Investments / Tex Morris “Hallowheel” charity tennis and pickleball tournaments, held Oct. 18-20, at BREC’s Highland Road Park. The tournaments attracted more than 200 players from eight states (LA, MS, TX, AL, FL, TN, AZ, and MI) who competed in men’s and women’s doubles (tennis and pickleball) and mixed doubles (pickleball).
The tennis tournament included a separate “Up-Down” draw where wheelchair players were paired with able-bodied players for doubles competition all weekend.
The pickleball activities included a certification clinic and a Pro-Am competition that included four world-rank professionals: Kyle Yates of Fort Myers, FL; Adam Stone of Houston, TX; Irina Tereschenko of Tucson, AZ; and Andrea Koop of Grand Haven, MI.
The weekend also featured the Hallowheel Adaptive Tennis Carnival where 16 children with disabilities were introduced to wheelchair tennis. They enjoyed a morning full of tennis instruction, games, and prizes.
Since 2015, the Hallowheel tournament has raised nearly $86,000 for the Cajun Classic. Hallowheel is one of the most unique tournaments in the United States, as it features a main draw of traditional men’s and women’s tennis doubles, a pickleball tournament, and a separate “Up-Down” draw.
The Hallowheel charity tennis tournament was created in 2015 by Emily Greene and Rusty Jabour who co-chair the event as a fundraiser for the world-acclaimed Cajun Classic. In 2017, Tex and Cindy Morris co-chaired the inaugural pickleball tournament as part of the fundraising activities.
